At the Dunfermline Podiatry Centre we regularly prescribe orthotics and insoles to our patients.
So what are Orthotics and Insoles and what are the differences between the two?
Whilst orthotics and Insoles do look similar and both are worn underfoot in a shoe they are completely different and are used to treat different conditions. Insoles tend to be very simple in design and are used for simple jobs, which mainly includes cushioning and simple deflection to take the pressure off of painful areas. They are very cheap (often included in the price of a routine treatment) and are very effective.
Orthotics are much more complex in design and they are used to treat complicated conditions which relate to the way the foot functions, in other words the way a person walks. Orthotics have a built-in prescription which holds the foot in a precise position, ensuring that the foot works as efficiently as possible. This is called biomechanics.
Many people do not realise that they need to use orthotics. The typical symptoms of a biomechanical problem are so common that many people do not make the connection between the symptoms they are experiencing and their feet. Biomechanical problems are very common and you may be surprised by how many aches and pains may be related to this. Typical symptoms include pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back. By simply introducing an orthotic to align your joints these symptoms can often be minimised, if not cured.
We have access to numerous orthotics and insoles and one of our podiatrists can assess your feet / alignment and choose the most suitable orthotic and prescription for your needs.
